Air Raid Precautions January 31 1942

By 1942, the Japanese armed forces threaten New Guinea and Australia. Anticipating attacks, blackout restrictions are introduced and air raid warning instructions are issued.

Men joined home defence organisations, the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) and the Volunteer Air Observers Corps (VAOC).
The National Emergency Services (NES) appoint air raid wardens. Their job is to monitor both air raid security and breaches of blackout regulations. In cities and towns around the country evacuation procedures are planned and practised.
